We now have THREE
Eco Schools Green Flags!
"Excellent curriculum integration and long term dedication to environmental issues...
Great understanding and involvement by the young children of the outdoor environment"
The award has been made without preconditions.
We're proud to say that the Playgroup won the 2008 Schools Grounds category of the all-Wales competition for Eco Schools.
What is Eco-Schools?
The Eco Schools Programme is an award scheme which promotes environmental awareness and sustainability. It does this by involving children, parents, staff and the wider community.
It focuses on topics such as waste minimisation and recycling, litter, water and energy consumption, healthy living, sustainable transport, outdoor learning and conservation, and global citizenship.
The Eco-Schools International Green Flag, awarded to schools with high achievement in their programme, is a recognised and respected eco-label for performance in Education for Sustainable Development. We now have our second Green Flag Award and are the first playgroup in Wales to have achieved this status. The Eco-Schools programme is a long-term activity, with the award being re-assessed and renewed every two years, so we now need to start working towards our third award.

Eco Newsletter Spring 2012
Autumn update ...
On Tuesday, 15th November last year, Julie Giles, from Eco Schools Wales came to assess our Playgroup to see if we would qualify for our third Green Flag award. The children discussed our eco code and eco topics at the eco meeting we held with her, and were able to give her a tour of our Wildlife and Learning garden. She reviewed our evidence files and informed us that we had been successful in gaining our third award! Well done to the children and thank you to all who continue to support Wick and District Playgroup as an Eco School. The award was given with no recommendations and stated :
"Excellent curriculum integration and long term dedication to environmental issues... Great understanding and involvement by the young children, of the outdoor environment."
On the 20th November last year a group from the adult eco committee came to lay the bark chippings and logs, which were kindly donated by Mark Picton, from RWE NPower, Aberthaw. Special thanks to Mr Squire (Iorwerth’s dad) for cutting the logs and arranging our log seating area that the children now use regularly. More bark chippings have been offered to us from RWE NPower, so we can continue to line our pathway throughout the garden.
Thank you to all who donated to ‘Children in Need’ last November. All monies have been gratefully received.
Spring...
This terms topic is ‘Night and Day’. The children have been learning and finding out about nocturnal animals. They have also enjoyed collecting twigs and leaves and suchlike to make a nocturnal woodland role play area which they have enjoyed playing in very much.
The children's eco-meeting (Tuesdays), for the first half term was on the topic of ‘Energy’, namely ‘Lights’. They took part in an ‘Eco hunt’ around Playgroup, recording if lights had been left on/off in any of the rooms. They then took an ‘Eco hunt’ home over half term to complete, which is now in our evidence files. Thank you to all who completed the hometask.
Marie Curie ‘mini pots of care’.
Thank you to all who brought in their daffodils in various stages of growth! The children compared the daffodils and discussed how plants grow. They have now been returned home for you to plant up in larger pots or your garden borders, and hopefully you will see them bloom again next spring! Thank you to all who kindly donated to Marie Curie Cancer Care, the monies have been banked and gratefully received. Eco meetings are held twice termly and usually in the Lamb and Flag in Wick! If you are interested in coming along please do!
